We have a female fox who lives near our flat. We met her within the first couple of weeks of moving to Bristol, and were really amazed by how relatively tame and unafraid of people she was. She was very bold, and didn’t seem to mind people being near her. A couple of months later I met her on our driveway and fed her cheese. Her teets were large, so she obviously had cubs somewhere.

I love foxes anyway, but I got used to seeing her around and was quite fond of her. On Wednesday night walking back to the flat from having a reasonably nice curry with a bunch of really lovely people in town, we walked a reasonable amount of the way home with a fox accompanying us. He was more interested in the bins in the area, but it was still nice to have a little fox to walk along with. Further down the road we saw three young cubs in a driveway playing with each other.

Lots of people don’t like foxes: they think they’re a pest and are dirty and now with certain stories circulating around they are apparently out to kill children and eat babies.

I love foxes: it makes me really happy to see them around. I grew up in the countryside where, ironically, seeing foxes was a rarity, and I still get excited when I see them. So I was really upset to see one of them dead on the pavement outside our flat yesterday. I’m still not quite sure what happened to it, but it looks pretty gruesome and looks like something nasty happened to it other than being hit by a car. I can only think it was one of the cubs I saw, and I really hope it wasn’t Doris, the friendly fox I’ve been used to seeing since I’ve moved here.

Anyway, it prompted me to find this lovely video on YouTube. Enjoy!
